Clayzaics

Making a MESS in an effort to get ready for the show ... but it sure is fun! A what a great excuse to get to leave some stuff lying around instead of putting it all away! Whoo hoo! These boxes will all be trinket boxes, each decorated in its own special way .... and priced to sell.

This is the background for our sign ... still a work in progress ... obviously ... needs to be grouted for one thing! And it needs letters and such for another ... otherwise you'd never know what the name of the company is! Duh!

And these are the letters Shannon made of clay ... brilliant artist that she is. Hit the enlarge button (click on the picture) because the detail in the letters is phenomenal! I will also be adding "bubbles" to the background on top of the yellow ... and paint around the edges of the frame. A work in progress ... hopefully I'll be grouting a bunch of stuff this weekend ... and this should be in the bunch!
Would LOVE to know what you think! Please comment! (but be gentle)
Thanks,
Cheri

Friday again ...

Christian, the sunflower gardner!

out with the begonias ... in with the mums!

Our dahlias are still magnificent! We've had a great flower year!

Avant Garden season 2009 ... so colorful this year!

Grandsons did a FABULOUS job with the green bean planting this year. They are coming in by the bushels (or so it seems) ... and they are VERY good!

Treasure hunting!

Beans a plenty! Thanks boys! Austin, Cade and Christian!

Christian's sunflower garden, he's definitely got a green thumb (like his dad)

Strawberries are even coming in and they are S W E E T !!!!!

More gorgeous sunflowers by Christian

I am always amazed when "it's already Friday" each week. I don't even think I had the opportunity to do a mid week post yet. Goodness ... I can't really say there has been that much happening either. It just seems that by the time I get up, get ready, get through the work day, get to the grocery store or soccer game to watch Paul, or walk with my friends for exercise and entertainment, or make phone calls and pay bills, it's time to go to bed already and the day has passed and I'm not quite finished with my list --- yet --- ever!
Yesterday Paul was supposed to referee a middle school game and I went on home to make home made chicken stoup (stew/soup). But his game was cancelled (due to rain that wasn't falling) and he came home so we just made the soup together. It was so nice to actually have time to talk and hang out together. Of course, that's my side of the story. He's probably still thinking to himself "did I really just help make soup ... why? I could've been playing x-box or doing computer research or ANYTHING but kitchen work" ... but it thrilled me. So, if he was thinking that ... I don't want to know about it! HA! He's GREAT at pulling chicken off of the bones! It's a good thing, it sort of makes me gag ... yuk! But we had veggies from the garden in there ... yum!
We begin teaching at Crossnore again this Saturday ... finally! I have missed it A LOT! I'm hoping the kids are looking as forward to it as I am! I'm pretty fat and happy from sitting around at work and sitting around at home. Hopefully this will catapult me into the need for movement again in my life. I'm not happy with lazy ... AT ALL. So, I'm finally going to get the opportunity to move in a dance class again. Whoo hoo!
I've been working on the inventory for the Octoberfest art festival. I hope it actually builds up before the day - yikes! I just don't seem to have the forward momentum I need. Am going to have to just keep taking those B-12 injections, I guess. :-)
We would just like to offer our love, hugs and prayers to those of you who are finding yourself in a difficult situation, and know that there will come blessings to count, in time. To our friends who are going through some grief and loss, we just want to make sure you all know we care and are sending special thoughts your way.
And from my horoscope today:
Don't try too hard to control your world today. Just be glad for all within it that's good.
I think I'll go with that until September ends!
Blessings to all,
Paul & Cheri

Beth's Beauties ...

Beth's house is FILLED with kitties! There are 4 babies and a very young mom. When they're all sleeping like this, they looks like a big puddle of kitties. They are SO sweet. Lots of purr and fur in this kitty circle ...

If you sit in Beth's living room at dinner time, you will likely see the "beauties" that Beth leaves corn out for. This is mommy and son. There is also another female who is acting as nanny, but is actually a sister. The two "girls" and the little boy come and together. Then after a while the baby will come back down all alone to scarf up whatever was left. But they are very aware of people, and they are very skittish. I can't tell you how SPECIAL it feels to see them in the wild doing their own thing. You can hear them chomping the corn and snorting at each other. So very special.

Mama didn't like taking her eyes off of us. They were VERY close to us ... VERY. I'm sure we smelled funny to them.

The girl looking at the camera is the "auntie"/nanny/sister. Mommy has a lot of scars and scrapes, not to mention bug bites. And she is about 7 years old according to Beth's calculations.

SO sweet. The little one here is such a luscious chestnut color. He's lost his baby spots on his rump, and his racing stripes around his neck are now gone ... but his color gives him away as a baby. And his appetite! That gives him away as a baby too!

Mom - on guard. They walked up the hill several times at her insistence. She really didn't like us taking pictures, so I promised her I wouldn't take any more. And I thanked her from my whole being for letting us meet them and watch their beauty. And I thanked Beth for sharing.
What a perfect Sunday evening!!
We actually went over to Beth's to visit with Beth and Mark as Mark was in town for a little while. Mark & Paul ended up hanging a storm door for Beth. Beth and I ended up chatting about life's miracles and such. Then the beauties showed up and we all sat and stared. What a perfect Sunday evening!
I can't believe I forgot to post these. Hope you enjoy!
It never got warmer than 60 degrees today and we were in a cloud all day long ... very mystical! I kept waiting for the Lady of the Avalon to come riding through on her white horse. But as that didn't happen, I'm moving on to preparing for tomorrow. I've also begun singing "The sun will come out, tomorrow" ... hope it's the truth!
Blessings to you all,
Paul & Cheri

Newest Family Member ...

You just can't live in the country without a truck.
Ain't she a beaut? And BIG fun too.
Came from a very good friend of Charles's. So nice to "know" people. This truck was used on the same family farm from NEW. Impressive!
4 wheel drive, 60,000 original miles!
We now have 4 cars in our "parking lot" that are over 13 years old!
Amazing!
Happy Trails!

Mid week Mountain Musings

The fall color sspectacular has begun. It isn't this colorful yet ... this is an archived picture. I just LOVE fall colors and the way the air feels. It is by far my favorite season.

So, I took Monday off of work (Labor Day without that kind of Labor). It's the best day I've had since we took the boys kayaking/canoeing on July 4th. I was able to have a complete art day. I painted wood, cut tiles, glued tiles, designed tiles, and marveled at puzzle making, which is what mosaic work really feels like. In between all that I did a couple of other things too ...

I decided to put on the "self clean" oven cycle while I was sitting on my front porch being the artist I am meant to be. I so LOVE technology when it makes oven cleaning this easy! And, being a technologically challenged month, the automatic door lock would not release. So now the oven seemed to be forever locked up tight (but very clean!). There was a horribly loud beeping that accompanied the red light and error message on the display panel (E1, F5 for those of you who are wondering if it's the same one you've seen on your display panels). Artemis and I endured that beeping for a while as I frantically searched through the Internet options ... and then after about 20 minutes of incessant, irritating, unpleasant beeping, it just quit beeping! Thank goodness! I thought maybe the oven had cooled off enough that the door would release, but NO, still had a red light and an error message, however it no longer seemed to be screaming URGENT!! URGENT!! (kept reminding me of a submarine under attack and the DIVE, DIVE alarm sounding). I relaxed as the intensity died down and went on about my mosaicing business just knowing that Mercury is, in fact, a very entertaining planet and being very aware that we take a lot of things for granted when she is in the direct mode.

While mosaicing on the front porch, listening to the birds merrily singing and all the outside noises that I desperately miss during the work day, my neighbor decided to crank up his noisy lawn mower and disturb the peace. Well, it was Monday, and he ALWAYS mows on Monday ... even the raining like crazy ones. If it's Monday, he will mow. So I dug through my purse, found my iPod and listened to some soothing yet inspiring music to get me through the mowing. Our lawns are large and it takes a while to mow. He finally finished and the birds we ecstatic having fresh lawn to feast upon. I was ecstatic having no more mowing sounds and all was right with the world on Old Mill Road, and in particular my front porch. AHHHHHHHHHH! After about 2 hours ... after the crazy oven beeping had subsided and the peace had become so sweet, the same lawn mower with the same lawn mowing mad man cranked up again ... and all of a sudden it was Ground Hog Day. Do you know he mowed his yard yet again? Entertainment value like you could never find ANY WHERE EVEN if you were looking for it! You gotta just nod and smile around here .... and remember to thank your lucky stars for being able to hear and see, and having time to sit on the front porch and watch the world, in all of its glory go by.

So, Tuesday I managed to get to work and when I turned on all the computers, found that my Internet was not working. After a check through the office found everyone else's Internet was working, I shut down, unplugged everything, re plugged in, rebooted and ta-dah! Internet magic. You've just got to hold your mouth right. Mercury, thank you.

Today, however, the entire building (and county) was Internet deprived until about 1:45 pm. The coffee shop could not accept debit cards and was sending people to the ATM machine for cash! People calling in could not understand "the Internet is down, you'll have to wait" since it never happens any where else (yeah, right!?!?) and then when the lightning and thunder began and I shut down everything technological, I was forced to actually fill out an envelope in long hand. That was when I decided to be entertained, THOROUGHLY. I'm so hoping the goddess of humor remains with me throughout the rest of this month. It's going to be a long one at this rate!

Back to the bliss I felt on Monday. I have decided THAT is my reality (the bliss, not the static). And that the "working for a living thing" is what happens during the station breaks. You know like when you're watching the real program on t.v. (that's the reality) and when the commercials come on and you get up and go to the bathroom and the kitchen (that's the interruption). Sometimes the interruptions are amusing or fretful ... or entertaining and satisfying, but for the most part they are just interruptions. The reality is in the real program ... which for me is my family, our house, my art projects, our friends, fun meals, beautiful blessings from the universe, and on and on. Only took me decades to realize I've been walking through backwards. Whew! NOW I bet the view will be much better and I will be truly entertained CONSISTENTLY. What more could I ask for!

So, I hope you have a clear view of what's "what" for you in your life. And I hope you get to take days for yourself on your front porch to watch your world go 'round. And I hope it is as entertaining and delightful for you all as it has been for me!

Two of my dear friends have experienced difficult losses in their lives this week. I just want to throw out a GIGANTIC embrace for Donna and Margaret. I hope you both can find some comfort to heal in and some peace in your hearts in place of the pain. I am sending bunches of love to you both.

and to everyone:
"May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us."

Keep your sense of humor!
**oh, and by the way, when my knight in shining armor came home from work on Monday night, I explained the oven malfunction to him. He went to the same internet I was using, but found answers I couldn't find. Then he went straight to the fuse box, flipped the breaker, and viola'!! No more locked door, red light or error message on the oven panel! (I don't do electric work for reasons better left unsaid - but Mars NOT Mercury was involved). My hero! It is so nice to be married to a genius. Thanks, honey!
Happy fall to all,
Cheri (& Paul)

Friday already

Is this a great moment captured or what? Can it be that she thinks we don't see her behind this tree? How many of us hide like this? HA!

The fall skies are beginning and we are absolutely blessed with some GORGEOUS sunrises and sunsets. Just thought I'd share one ... there are many more to come. THIS is what the universe gives us to admire and be overwhelmed with. Admittedly, I'm usually not paying attention when it happens, but there are those times that I do look and those moments are such a HUGE gift to my humble my little self. As many of you know, I have a horrible time getting up in the dark...or anytime before 9ish. However, with working for a living these days, I do manage to rise and partially shine before the sun rises. Look at what I get to see out of my kitchen window when I remember to look! How lucky is that?!? Amazing!!

On to the "before and after" of some not so delightful nooks and crannies of our Grand Madame house. (Beth coined that phrase for us ... I hope it will rise to the title some day). This unsightly pipe and air duct vent is in the hallway as you enter the "2nd phase" of the hallway. To the right is the kitchen, to the left is the office and just beyond on the left is the bathroom and in the VERY back is the sleeping porch (right now is massive storage for things we've yet to unpack. We've only been here 3 years next month --- yee gads). It is not possible to move throughout the house without passing this beastly mess. So, one night around 10 or 11 pm before we were expecting guests for the weekend, Paul's creative juices were flowing at the same time as my "finding things" skills kicked in. Such a fun pas de deux - our favorite!

Here's another view ... just lovely, don't you think? And check out the disassembled fire alarm! That thing was screaming to the top of it's speaker volume when we moved in. Paul reached up and jerked the wires out. It doesn't work any more. We've installed a new/improved version. It doesn't scream unless it's sounding the alarm. PERFECT!

I found this fabric that Caroline had so generously given to us and Paul found our staple gun, hammer with nails, and ladder. We still have finishing touches, of course ... but boy does it look (and feel) a million times better!!!! We can pretend all that ugly stuff isn't in our house (out of sight, out of mind) yet when we HAVE to remember it due to problems or maintenance, we can get to it without ripping out walls and such. Apparently there was a leak (burst pipe) in the upstairs bathroom before we bought the house, and in order to find/fix it the wall had to be ripped out. Geniuses that they were never fixed the leak, but they did turn off the water. Not quite sure why the wall was missing in that case, but oh well!!! Anyway, that left all those exposed vents and pipes with that pretty pink insulation to look at! There was also a giant hole in the kitchen ceiling, but we'll save that for another post! The ceiling in this hall area is next to refurbish... one of these years. And I still have some seams to secure and smooth out ... but hey, the illusion is there for now and we are happy with that. I love perfection, but "good enough" has begun to make me happy! Oye vey!

This area is to the left of the newly fabriced wall. It is our office. As you are looking at this picture, to the left is the staircase leading to the upstairs area. It had pepto-bismol pink trim with avocado green shag carpeting. It was hideous in my opinion, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I tried not to throw up while painting over it! This is the very first "room" I painted after we moved in. It was a small and safe place to start. Paul had painted the big rooms with bleach twice, then with mistinted paint. It did a great job on the moldy, mildewy walls. But this room just needed to start the whole pallet moving. And did I mention it felt manageable?

This is our chaos ... but never mind that ... it's the color of the wall you're supposed to be looking at. The paintings of the kitties were done by Chrissie Grace. She is AMAZING. check here out at her blog and/or website button on this page. She's amazing!

This is that window that had the bed sheet hanging over it in the "before" picture ... and some more art work (mosaic gypsy) and a beautiful Lion King poster. We went with white trim, which was such fun to paint over that pink. Whew - 4 coats counting the primer! My iron worker husband managed to get the railing framed and installed. Someday there will be a pattern in it ... maybe when the building gets up and running. And we'll do the floor as we get the floors doing .... it's all a work in progress ... forever more I suspect!

And this is how the hallway run in to this area. The hallway with the beautiful fabric disguising all that "stuff" you saw before.
So, now you've seen some "befores and afters" as I mentioned I'd be posting a while back.
We had an unfortunate computer virus which absolutely wiped out our desk top. The guy was able to get some ridiculous documents off of the drive, but unfortunately we lost all of the pictures we'd been documenting from day one of the decision to buy the house til now. I have some of them on my laptop ... and we're very grateful for what we do still have. But I am still in mourning for the loss of so many pictures. BACK UP YOUR STUFF!!!! Anyway, we will continue to post before and after when I have the pics to do so ....
There are lots of birthdays on our calendar this month, but the calendar's at home and I'm not. So I will have to post those at a later date. But happy birthday to all your September babies!!!!!
Jenn is in Japan again. Travel safely and have fun, Jenn!
Melissa & Jon are moving today. Good luck kids!!!
Nina's in school and working at the hospital. Hang in, Nina!
The garden is producing beans like mad! We still are reaping yellow squash, peppers galore and corn. The weather is simply glorious and I hope to get out in the yard and plant mums and clean up tomorrow. Mowing is high on my priority list just because I can and it's beautiful! This is always a reminder of why we came here. FALL IS GORGEOUS!!!!!
Labor Day weekend this weekend --- y'all be safe and enjoy life. Remember, no white shoes after this weekend! The only fashion tip of the year I will offer. ;-)
Paul has begun reffing soccer. I watched him "do" a game last night. He was quite the ref, and very serious with his job. FUN. Having said that, you probably know he's feeling better now. MUCH better. He's been staining a deck this week (for work) and he seems to be getting his legs back under him pretty well. He's not completely there yet, but he's come a long way since room 222! Thankfully!!!!
Happy trails!
Paul & Cheri
***Mercury turns retrograde September 7th. Saturn and Uranus renew their trouble-stirring opposition, briefly becoming more powerful than the healing "triple conjunction" of Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron, which fortunately will be running in the background whilst the battle carries on throughout the month of September. Back up your computers, protect your DVDs and etc. Anything that has to do with communication (yes, including contracts and legal docs) are at high risk during a mercury retrograde. Travel safely. Be aware. Be patient with loved ones and friends. This is going on record with the astrology sect as being a stressful month. Hang on tight and know the retrograde turns direct on September 29th. Also be ready for some things to have permanently changed ... as in FOREVER. Check http://www.astrologyzone.com/ for your own sign if you're interested.***
Blessings to all.
